  • Capitol On Lockdown 

A motorist has mowed down two police officers outside the US Capitol, forcing authorities to declare a lockdown in the area.

The motorist was then shot dead by police after smashing into a barrier and emerging with a knife on Friday afternoon, reports by The New York Post said.

One of the police officers was also killed, Acting Chief of Police Yogananda D. Pittman said during a news conference.

The incident took place at a vehicle checkpoint on the north side of the Capitol along Constitution Avenue in Washington DC, police said.

It was reported that the driver got out of the car with a knife after hitting the officers, then was shot.

Two US Capitol police were injured in the incident.

The incident took place amid heavy security put in place following the deadly Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
