The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has backed the candidacy of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

ECOWAS is also rallying its member-states and African countries outside the bloc to endorse Okonjo-Iweala for the plum job.

Recall The New Diplomat had reported that the race for the WTO DG is almost becoming crowded with more intrigues surfacing as no few than six countries have nominated candidates for the position.

Earlier this month, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the nomination of Okonjo-Iweala, former coordinating minister for the economy, for WTO DG.

Her endorsement by ECOWAS comes weeks after Egypt had rejected Nigeria’s bid, faulting the withdrawal of Ambassador Frederick Agah’s nomination by Nigeria.
