The National Security Adviser (NSA), General Babagana Monguno (retd.), on Tuesday, said President Muhammadu Buhari, has again passed a vote of no confidence on the security service chiefs as insecurity in the country reaches new highs following an attack on the convoy of Borno state governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum last week.
The NSA said the worsening security situation has made it rife for the President to overhaul the nation’s security architecture.
Biefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the National Security Council meeting presided over by the President, Monguno said Buhari reaffirmed his last marching orders to the nation’s security chiefs that their best effort has not been good enough.
According to the NSA, Buhari noted that Nigerians have lost confidence in the security sector and he is determined to restore that confidence.
Others at the meeting include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno and some ministers.
The heads of the army, navy, air force, police, State Security Service, and Directorate of Military Intelligence also attended the meeting.
The meeting held less than a week after armed persons attacked the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Zulum, in Baga, a community with a history of Boko Haram attacks. Zulum has, however, said he believes the attack was carried out by soldiers.
Apart from the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno and neighbouring states, armed bandits are also attacking northwestern states randomly, killing and kidnapping dozens of people every month.
Many people have also been killed in renewed violence in Southern Kaduna.
