President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.

Buhari taps Yahaya seven days after the immediate past Army Chief, Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru was killed last Friday in a military plane crash in Kaduna.

Yahaya’s appointment was announced on Thursday by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, acting Director Defence Information

Prior to his appointment, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army.

He is also the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East, code-named Operation Hadin Kai.

The New Diplomat recalls Attahiru, who was buried alongside 10 other military officers on Saturday in Abuja, was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff on January 21, 2021 by President Buhari. His appointment alongside other military chiefs at the time came after months-long demand by Nigerians for a change in the nation’s security apparatus to re-launch the war against insecurity nationwide.
