The United States presidential election is still on the knife edge as President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden continue to battle for several battleground states that could prove crucial in determining who wins the White House.
As of the time of this reporting, Biden is leading with 248 electoral college votes, while Trump has ganered 214, according to Associated Press (AP) count.
The former Vice President just won Wisconsin, having 10 electoral votes, according to AP call, even though Trump is contesting the results.
But Biden appears to be extending that lead as he’s narrowly leading in Nevada (6 electoral votes), Michigan (16 electoral votes), two states that would put his college votes tally at exactly 270 votes enough to win the presidency. From the results, he now needs 22 votes to hit the required number.
Should Biden win the two states, it thus mean a win for Trump in Pennsylvania (20 electoral votes), Georgia (16) and North Carolina (15) may come to nought –the Republicans are currently leading in all the three states.
For Trump, the simplest way for him to find the 56 electoral votes he needs would be to win Pennsylvania and at least three other states to get to 270 votes.
It was unclear when or how quickly a winner could be determined, explaining the much uncertainty surrounding the election even as Trump has alleged electoral fraud in the vote counting process, threatening to seek a redress at the US Supreme Court.
Trump campaign manager, Bill Stepien said the president would formally request a Wisconsin recount, citing “irregularities in several Wisconsin counties.” The state allows for an apparent losing candidate to request a recount if the margin is less than 1%.
Hundreds of thousands of votes were still to be counted in Pennsylvania.
Neither candidate has cleared the 270 electoral College votes needed to win the White House, and the margins were tight in several other battleground states.
The New Diplomat’s checks reveal that over 160 million votes were cast in the US presidential election 2020, a turnout rate of about 67 per cent, which is higher than the country has witnessed in more than a century.
