Marwa, A Man of Uncommon Grace at 72

By Femi Babafemi I have had the privilege of knowing Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) for about 30 years. As a young reporter, I observed from a working distance the metamorphosis of a military administrator who was unlike any other—an enigma committed as much to his work as to becoming a paragon of excellence…

Thailand’s former PM Thaksin Shinawatra to Serve One-year Prison Term For Previous Convictions

Thailand’s Supreme Court said former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra must serve a one-year prison term for previous convictions. The court was investigating whether officials had mishandled his return to Thailand in 2023 to begin serving the sentences. Following his return to Thailand after more than a decade of living in self-exile, Thaksin was sent to…

Late Saturday, reports emerged that the Department of State Services (DSS) has allegedly invited Bishop Matthew Kukah to its headquarters for questioning on some matters.

Though the reason for the invitation remains sketchy, the security agency was said to have inivited the fiery clergyman on Saturday.

The invitation comes few days after Kukah criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in his Christmas message.

Kukah, a strong critic of the Buhari’s administration had in the past carpeted the President on insecurity and economy.

Most recently, Kukah in his Christmas message said that with the daily deaths being recorded across the country, it has become clear that the administration of Buhari no longer values the sacredness of human life.

The fiery preacher wondered why the government has remained silent on the detention of the remaining Chibok schoolgirls, Dapchi schoolgirls, Leah Sharibu and other abducted students in their captors’ den.

The Bishop had said, “The silence of the federal government only feeds the ugly beast of complicity in the deeds of these evil people who have suspended the future of entire generations of our children.

“Every day, we hear of failure of intelligence, yet those experts who provide intelligence claim that they have always done their duty diligently and efficiently. Does the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not believe that he owes parents and citizens answers as to where our children are and when they are coming home?

“Does the President of Nigeria not owe us an explanation and answers as to when the abductions, kidnappings, brutal, senseless, and endless massacres of our citizens will end? When will our refugees from Cameroon, Chad or Niger return home? We need urgent answers to these questions.

“While I commend the efforts of our security men and women, I call on the President, in collaboration with the Governors who are doing their best to preserve and protect their people to develop a more honest, open, and robust strategy for ending the humiliation of our people and restoring social order to our people. We have borne enough humiliation as communities and as a country.”

Meanwhile, the DSS hasn’t officially commented on the reports claiming Kukah has been invited.

Also, it is unclear if Bishop Kukah has honoured the invitation as he is yet to react to the invitation as of press time
