United States President Joe Biden has officially declared January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States for former President Jimmy Carter.
The declaration follows the announcement of Carter’s death at the age of 100, on December 29, 2024.
Biden also called on Americans to assemble in their places of worship to pay homage to Carter’s memory.
Additionally, Biden ordered that US flags be flown at half-mask for 30 days in honour of Carter, which will include the period around the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Biden explained that the day of mourning is intended to recognize Carter’s contributions both during his presidency and his extensive post-presidency humanitarian work, for which he also received the Nobel Peace Prize.
This was contained in a White House proclamation issued on Monday. Biden stated: “I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr.
“I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance,”
