German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen made history on Saturday by becoming the first team in the league to complete an entire season unbeaten following their 2-1 victory over Augsburg.
Saturday’s victory for Xabi Alonso and his team marked their 51st consecutive game without a loss this season.
Having secured their first-ever Bundesliga title in April, Leverkusen’s triumph was sealed with goals from Nigeria’s Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich. The team is also set to compete in the Europa League final against Atalanta and the German Cup final this week, aiming for an unbeaten treble.
Alonso’s Leverkusen took the lead just 12 minutes into the match when Amine Adli pressured Augsburg goalkeeper Tomas Koubek into a mistake, allowing Adli to gain possession and set up Victor Boniface for a close-range finish.
Midfielder Robert Andrich extended Leverkusen’s lead at the 27-minute mark by backheeling a rebound into the net.
Augsburg teenager Mert Komor, making his first start for the visitors, pulled one back with a stunning strike in the 62nd minute. Despite this, Leverkusen held on to secure the win, setting the stage for what could be a historic week for the club.
The icing on the cake for Leverkusen would be the continental showdown as they face Nigerian Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta in the final of the Europa League competition on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
