President of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the Parliament on Tuesday following widespread protests organized by Bangladeshi youths.

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Press Secretary of the President, Shiplu Zaman.

In the statement, Shahabuddin also announced that the leader of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Begum Khaleda Zia, a former prime minister had been freed from house arrest.

The New Diplomat reports that the announcement of Bangladesh’s president came after protesters had demanded the dissolution of the parliament.

The President’s announcement has now cleared the way for an interim government and new elections a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned following the protest.

Hasina’s flight on Monday ended her 15-year second stint in power. She had ruled the country for 20 of the last 30 years, having inherited the political movement of her father, state founder Mujubur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1975.
