Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has disclosed the reason for his resignation from the Tinubu’s government.

The former presidential aide spoke on Channels TV’s ‘Politics Today’ on Thursday night.

Speaking on what prompted his decision, Baba-Ahmed maintained that the Tinubu administration lacked “the drive and commitment needed to address Nigeria’s most pressing issues”, particularly poverty and insecurity, which he argued have worsened during President Tinubu’s tenure.

He stated that he has no regrets about serving in the administration but he would not consider returning to government.

“The way the Tinubu government is going, no, I won’t go back. I’ve done my bit,” Baba-Ahmed said, when asked if he would consider returning to the administration.

He further clarified that he would not return to a government that, in his view, “no longer holds the people’s mandate to deliver significant change”.

Baba-Ahmed stressed that he could not continue working in an administration where, in his opinion, the primary challenges of the country were being neglected.

He also addressed the issue of political loyalty, stating that he did not want to be seen as one of those politicians who move from one party to another for personal gain.

Baba-Ahmed was appointed in September 2023 as Special Adviser on Political Matters in the Office of Vice President Kashim Shettima. At the time, he expressed his commitment to contributing to nation-building.

However, after less than two years in the role, in April 2025, he resigned, citing personal reasons.
