But constitutional rights are not moral shields, and mercy must ennoble justice, not mock it.…

Nigeria’s former vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiki Abubakar, on Sunday, reacted to the recent invasion by armed bandits who abducted students of the Federal University in Gusau, and terrorise other environs in Zamfara State.

Atiki in his reaction said, despite the security architecture invested in the country, Nigerians have continued to live in a perpetual state of insecurity, as terrorists, militants, and bandits have continued to invade communities.

In his words on X platform, “The news of the invasion of the Federal University of Gusau and the abduction of a number of students by bandits who were also said to have invaded the Sabon-Gida community in the Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State is very unfortunate.

Hear him: “It is equally regrettable that despite the huge investment in national defense, Nigerians have continued to live in a state of insecurity as terrorists, militants, and bandits have continued to ride roughshod over our communities.

“The recent kidnap is one incident too many. While I sympathize with the victims of this incident, I commend the security agencies for being able to rescue some of them.

“I also charge the security agencies to step up efforts to rescue those still in captivity and put an end to these acts of barbarism, banditry and brigandage that has continued to put our compatriots in a state of perpetual fear and anguish.”

It would be recalled that a large number of armed bandits on Friday, invaded the hostels of undergraduates of Federal University Gusau, FUG, in Sabin Gida area of Zamfara State, and abducted an unspecified number of female students.

Mohammed Ameen, a resident of Sabon Gida where the off-campus hostel is located, told Vanguard on phone that the bandits stormed three female students hostels at night and took away many students.

According to him, the victims were many. He added that some narrowly escaped and that no one knows how many were abducted.

Ameen said: “As I speak with you, many of the female students were kidnapped by the bandits except those who narrowly escaped.

“We are yet to confirm the number of students kidnapped but the bandits entered three hostels and kidnapped all the students living there.

“It is difficult to ascertain their numbers now.”
