Culture, Religion, and Sensitivity: A Plea for Thoughtfulness By Johnson Babalola

By Johnson Babalola The music of Wale Glorious, the late Akure-born juju musician of the late 60s and early 70s, remains one of my all-time favorites. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has called for the arrest and prosecution of Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemi, popularly known as Igboho.

MACBAN who directed this call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said if the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, could be arrested and still facing trial, same treatment should apply to Igboho.

According to a statement issued by the MACBAN National President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma, the call for the arrest and prosecution of Igboho is in response to his remarks that Fulani herders should be expunged from the Southwest.

The New Diplomat reports that Igboho recently returned to Nigeria after about two years of been in exile over his call for the succession of the southwestern region from Nigeria. Since returning to the country, Igboho had accused Fulani herders of killing farmers in the Southwest.

However, Ngelzarma described Igboho’s remark as an unlawful comment that amounts to treason.

In the statement he signed, Ngelzarma said: “We call on the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) and relevant security agencies to arrest and prosecute Sunday Igboho for making this unlawful statement that amounts to treason because he is asking for the actualisation of Oduduwa nation.

“His statements are unlawful. If Nnamdi Kanu will be held behind bars for a similar offence, we see no reason why Sunday Igboho will be allowed to go scot-free without being arrested and prosecuted.”
