The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has declared a three-day national mourning period for the 17 soldiers who lost their lives in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State.
The New Diplomat reports that at least 17 soldiers of the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the NA, who were on a peaceful and mediatory mission in Okuama and Okoloba Communities in Ughelli South and Bomadi LGAs of Delta State were murdered by armed gangs in the communities.
Among the deceased are the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion Oleh, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi Hassan Ali, the Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander in Bomadi, Major Gembu Shafa, another Major, and a Captain.
Following the declaration of the mourning period, flags are to be flown at half-mast in all military locations across the country. Flying the flag at half-mast is a gesture of respect and sorrow for heroic personnel who have lost their lives in the service of the nation.
The mourning period which commenced on Monday, would last till March 20, 2024.
