From Ameachi Prosper (The New Diplomat’s Delta Correspondent)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State have differed sharply on how the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration is handling the flood victims.

In a statement, Barr. Sylvester Imonina, the state APC publicity secretary, accused the governor of displaying negligence towards the flood victims saying, Delta state government under the leadership of Governor Okowa has woefully failed in responding to the plight of thousands of Deltans whose lives and properties have  been ravaged by flood for several weeks now.

“It is a fact that horrific flood has displaced many Deltans who live in the riverine areas of Delta South, Central and North senatorial Districts and because of the negative effects of the flood, lives, homes, farmlands and businesses have been lost in most of these communities! In fact, the pains/trauma that those affected are going through cannot be quantified!

“Delta APC and indeed Deltans are surprised at the “I don’t care” attitude of governor Ifeanyi Okowa towards the horrible conditions that these Deltans find themselves. Till date, no internally displaced persons’ Camp has been set up to house them for the meantime nor palliatives sent to them to cushion the starvation that stares at them on the face every passing day!

“Though, Delta APC is not oblivious of the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent #EndSARS protest have had a very negative effect on the finances of many States in the Federation, but that cannot be a justification for the callousness of the State Government towards the plight of her citizens. After all, Government and governance is about the welfare and wellbeing of the people.”

But, the PDP said it is the height of impenitence for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State to want to continue to give the impression that the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is out of favour with the good people of the State.

In a statement, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, the spokesman of the party in the state, said of course, despite all the mischievous pranks of the lie telling APC and its infantile publicity machinery, the popularity of the Governor and the people’s support for his good works have continued to soar, even in the face of the challenge that the Covid-19 pandemic has constantly posed with dwindling sources of funds.
