There is growing apprehension among residents of Benin City and its environs following reports that some detained persons suspected to kidnappers and armed robbers have reportedly escaped from the detention  center of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Edo State Police Command.

The New Diplomat’s checks reveal that the accurate number of suspects that allegedly escaped is yet to be ascertained. However, it was learnt that the incident reportedly occurred  on Saturday, a development which allegedly caught many Police officers unaware.

It would be recalled that  the CID detention centre in Edo State which  is located at the state Police command headquarters has been serving as a fortified detention point for a while. This has triggered concerns and raised many questions as to how the suspects allegedly fled.

Checks indicate that notorious suspected armed robbers, criminals and  suspects  of various shapes whose actual identities are still yet to be determined  are among those who have allegedly escaped from the CID detention in Benin City.

It would be recalled that some criminals had last year  similarly escaped from Oko Prison in the wake of the #EndSARS protest.

However, following the determination of the state government to bring to book the fleeing suspects, they were  later apprehended by law efficient enforcement agents.

Latest media reports suggest that  the current incident is  now a subject of investigation just as it has triggered apprehension among residents of Benin City and its environs.

Repeated efforts to reach the Edo  State Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo and the command’s spokesman, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, were unsuccessful as calls were not answered.
