A former Governor of Benue State, Senator Gabriel Suswam, has said the survival of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) now hangs in the balance with the gale of crisis buffeting the party here and there for the past two years or thereabouts.
Suswam likened the opposition party to a critically ill patient who is seeking medical recourse in the intensive care unit (ICU), stressing that the party’s chances of survival are slim.
The erstwhile Benue state governor who spoke on Arise Television’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Tuesday maintained that PDP may die before the 2027 election if the party’s leadership fails to initiate concrete efforts to address its lingering crisis.
The ex-governor disclosed that the party is being offered a new lease of life by recent efforts by PDP governors and ex-governors, led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, adding that failure of the move may mark the end of the party.
“A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party.
“Whether there is light at the end of the tunnel in the efforts made by Senator Saraki that will be seen in the next two weeks. For now, I would say that PDP, is it in the hospital? Yes. Is it in ICU to some extent? Yes, it is. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied.”
Recall that on one hand, the PDP is battling internal crisis over its national secretary position and on the other hand, the party is unsettled by the conflict between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.
These developments have weakened the influence of this opposition party with many of its members dumping it for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
