Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has called on Nigerians to mobilise ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that President Bola Tinubu is not politically unbeatable.
Speaking on Tuesday at the 2025 National Electoral Reforms Summit in Abuja, Amaechi cautioned against political apathy and the growing perception that election outcomes are predetermined. He argued that such narratives only serve the interests of those currently in power.
“When you say the president is invincible, he is not invincible. I’ve worked with him and I know him,” Amaechi said. “When you say the results are already written, they deliberately push that so people won’t come out. But if Nigerians turn out en masse, nobody will write any results.”
The former governor of Rivers State, who once served as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, accused Nigeria’s political elite and state institutions of weakening accountability and suppressing popular participation.
He urged citizens to drive electoral reforms instead of waiting on government or traditional civic groups to act.
“Don’t wait for the NLC. There is no NLC. There is no ASUU or NANS anymore. If you are waiting for government to initiate reform, you are wasting your time,” he said. “Before the election, there must be organised resistance to those who do not want a credible process.”
Amaechi also lamented rising poverty, saying hunger has become a national reality regardless of class.
“Whether I’m hungry or not, are Nigerians not hungry?” he asked.
His remarks are seen as diverging from recent statements by former Abia governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who argued that Tinubu would face no serious opponent in 2027, framing it as a “Tinubu versus Tinubu” race.
