The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021) has been concluded on Sunday with Senegal defeating Egypt to win its first-ever trophy.

The 33rd edition of the AFCON which was hosted in Cameroon was played between 9th of January to 6th of February, 2022.

A total of 24 teams competed in the AFCON 2021. The 24 teams were drawn into six groups of four teams. After the group stage, the top two teams from each group and the four highest ranked third-placed teams advanced to the round of 16. From then on the tournament proceeded with a knockout phase.

With the conclusion of the tournament, a total of 100 goals were scored across the total 52 matches.

Cameroonian striker, Vincent Aboubakar received the award for the Golden Boot, scoring eight goals. Aboubakar scored in five consecutive matches at the tournament, becoming the only second player to achieve that feat in the history of AFCON.

Also, Senegalese goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy also won the award for the Best Goalkeeper. He kept a total of five clean sheets in the tournament.

Sadio Mane was also awarded the Best Player award for his match winning performances throughout the tournament. The talisman scored a total of three goals.

The next tournament, AFCON 2023 is scheduled to be hosted by Ivory Coast, the second time the country would host the competition.

The tournament is expected to be played between 23rd of June, 2023 to 23rd of July, 2023.
