Nigerian singer-songwriter Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has clinched the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.
Tems won the award for her song “Love Me JeJe,” which has been regarded as a standout song from her debut album, ‘Born in the Wild’, released in 2024.
This song not only topped charts like the United Kingdom (UK) Afrobeats Chart but also reached No. 3 on Billboard’s US Afrobeats Songs.
“Love Me JeJe” was praised by many for its innovative blend of nostalgia with contemporary R&B and Afrobeats.
The New Diplomat reports that Tems triumphed over a formidable lineup of artists in her category, including Burna Boy with “Higher”; Asake & Wizkid with “MMS”; Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay with “Sensational”; Yemi Alade with “Tomorrow”
With this win, Tems became the first Nigerian artist to win in the Best African Music Performance category, which was introduced in 2024.
