Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a lawmaker representing Abia South Senatorial District of Abia State has led his colleagues from the South-east to meet the Attorney-General of the Federation(AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, over a possible release of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.
This comes a few hours after South East Governors announced plans to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over a possible release of Kanu.
Speaking after a closed-door meeting which lasted for hours, Abaribe, a former deputy governor of Abia state said the reason they met with Fagbemi was to discuss terms on how the release of Kanu could be achieved.
Abaribe said the continued detention of Kanu has led to a sit-at-home order being implemented every Monday in the South-East.
He said releasing Kanu would help the social and economic activities in the Southeast region.
Abaribe said he had already met with Mr Kanu at the headquarters of the State Security Service (SSS) and that Mr Kanu had agreed to abide by any conditional release.
He added that virtually all political leaders, religious leaders and stakeholders have unanimously agreed that Kanu be released for peace to bounce back to the region.
The New Diplomat reports that Kanu has been facing Stormy waters since he was first arrested in Lagos State on October 14, 2015, upon his return to the country from the United Kingdom, UK.
Justice Nyako had on April 25, 2017, granted him bail on health grounds, after he had spent about 18 months in detention.
Upon the perfection of the bail conditions, he was on April 28, 2017, released from the Kuje prison.
However, midway into the trial, the IPOB leader escaped from the country after soldiers invaded his country home at Afara Ukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State, an operation that led to the death of some of his followers.
Kanu was later re-arrested in Kenya on June 19, 2021, and extraordinarily renditioned back to the country by security agents on June 27, 2021.
Following the development, the trial court, on June 29, 2021, remanded him in custody of DSS, where he remained till date.
