The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has re-opened the case file of immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio, with a resolve to intensify investigations into alleged flood of petitions against him.

EFCC sources told The New Diplomat at the weekend that the commission is not leaving anything to chance as it is pursuing all possible leads. Said a top source:  “We received several petitions against the former governor and investigations are currently ongoing. It is on as it is not a closed case. The commission wants to get to the roots of all the petitions before it.’’

It would be recalled the EFCC had arrested Senator Akpabio late last year following allegations levelled against him by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong. The activist had alleged that the former governor misappropriated about N108,1billion belonging to the Akwa Ibom State Government while he was governor of the state.

Since then, not much has been heard about the case. But the EFCC said at the weekend that it was still on the case.

On his part, Akpabio would neither answer nor reply to text messages sent to him by our reporter.  Also when contacted, Akpabio’s media aide, Aniete Ekong, promised to get back with a reaction but as at the time of going to press, he was yet to respond.
