Delta State Government has imposed curfew in Ika North East LGA, following attempt by some youths of the area to burn down traditional Ruler’s palaces and other public facilities over Yellow Fever outbreak in the area.

It was gathered that the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa approved the curfew  following reports that angry  youths of Ute-Okpu were threatening to stage violent protests, over the deaths earlier recorded from a strange disease which later diagnosed as yellow fever.

The chairman, Ika North East LGA, Barr. Victor Ebonka, who announced the curfew during a press conference said the curfew became necessary because of reactions of the youths of the affected community.new Yellow Fever outbreak

The New Diplomat’s checks also show that the curfew was as a result of Ute-Opku youths reported attempt to burn down  the palace of the community’s traditional ruler over what they described as government’s inability to curtail the spread of the strange disease which ravaged about three communities with over 30 deaths recorded.

According to the LGA Chairman, the curfew  would commence on Monday 23rd November 2020 from 6:00pm in the evening to 6:00am in the morning.

However, to achieve the national target of eliminating Yellow Fever Epidemic (EYE) by 2026, the state said it would begin  Yellow Fever vaccination from December 4, 2020 for persons between the ages of nine months to 44 years in 22 LGAs of the state.

The Executive Director, Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency (DSPHCDA), Dr Jude Winful-Orieke, said Governor Okowa would flag off of the exercise on December 3, 2020.

Dr Winful-Orieke disclosed that  the exercise would be in all LGAs of the state except for Ughelli North, Ika North East and Ika South LGAs, explaining that those local government areas implemented what he described as ‘Reactive Yellow Fever’ vaccination following the outbreak of the disease in the state.
