Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured protesters that the victims of the proscribed Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) would soon get justice.

Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that the trial of the police officers involved in the killing of protesters last Monday had commenced.

#EndSARS protesters on Friday night held a candlelight vigil in honour of all those who have been killed by SARS over the years.SARS and protesters

The candlelight event was held at different locations across the country as prayers were offered for the repose of their souls. The protesters after the prayers were said to have sang the National Anthem.

Many who could not be physically present at the event took to social media in solidarity and support with the #EndSARS protesters on ground who came out  to protest in different places in the country against police brutality and extra-judicial killings.

The governor who watched the nationwide candlelight procession for SARS victims said the moment calls for sober reflections.

Sanwo-Olu on his official Twitter handle said: “I have seen powerful images and videos of the #CandleForSARSVictims vigils held across the country. It calls for very sober reflections.

“Some of the victims attended and will testify before the panel next week. Justice will be served. Thank you to the team for actively following up and helping victims.

“There is so much more to be done and I will keep sharing the actions we are taking in line with my announcements.”

Similarly, Edo State governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki has called on the Police Command to provide adequate security for protesters, saying they are merely exercising their rights as concerned citizens.

Recall that two protesters were also killed by thugs on Friday in Benin-City, Edo State and the State Governor, Mr Obaseki  was quick to condemn the incident and condole with the families of the victims.

The governor also charged the Police Command to provide adequate security to the protesters, as they were exercising their rights as concerned citizens of Nigeria.

Recall that Global group, Amnesty International in June published a report titled ‘Time to End Impunity’ which documented at least 82 cases of torture, ill treatment and extra-judicial execution by SARS between January 2017 and May 2020.
