After the preppings that lasted for months, the D-day is here in Ondo state, Southwest Nigeria.
Voters are heading to the poll to elect a governor from the surplus 17 candidates on the ballot in this off-season guber election.
The New Diplomat in its pre-election analysis had reported that for their political clout and structures, the Saturday’s battle royale is primarily among the torchbearers of the All Progressives Congress (APC), incumbent Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Eyitayo Jegede, as well as the candidate of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Hon. Agboola Ajayi, who remains an incumbent Deputy Governor in spite of the months-long feud with his estranged boss, Akeredolu.
1,478,460 eligible electors are armed with Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) out of the 1,822,346 registered voters in Ondo state.
Jegede’s Ondo Central has the highest voting population in the state, followed by Ajayi’s South, and Akeredolu’s North, however, the three districts have six local government areas each with complex political dynamics.
The New Diplomat reports that the election is likely to go down as a keen contest as no political party has a sweeping dominance in all the areas in Ondo.
