A combined troop of the Nigerian Army and Navy on Tuesday rescued five expatriates who were abducted by pirates in Yellow Island in the Niger Delta.
The rescued five foreign workers comprise of three Russians, an Ukrainian and another from Equatorial Guinea.
The expatriates had been abducted since May 9, 2020.
The rescue operations was made known by Major-General John Enenche, Head of Media for Defence Operations.
In a statement, Enenche disclosed that the victims were freed after troops stormed the hideouts of the pirates in the creeks.
He added that the rescued workers are presently receiving medical attention at the NNS Pathfinder medical centre.
Enenche said that upon receipt of the intelligence reports on the abduction, a joint team of naval operatives and troops of 146 Battalion combed the creeks in search of the kidnapped victims.
“The five expatriates comprising three Russians, one Ukranian and one Equatorial Guinean are presently at NNS Pathfinder medical centre receiving medical attention,” he said.
The Major General added that the operation yielded fruits which led to the destruction of camps used by pirates and as a result of this, the pirates were forced to hand over the five foreigners to the troops at Iwofe Waterfront.
