The Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC) has disclosed that internet users in Nigeria has reached 149.8 million subscribers.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta said the increase calls for more responsibility on the part of individuals and corporate internet users to protect themselves against cybercrimes.

He urged all Nigerians to be cyber security-conscious as Internet users keep increasing and the volume of online activities and transactions in the country.Nigerian Internet Users

Danbatta who spoke during the 2020 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) said, “The increase in digital financial transactions for e-commence activities calls for greater responsibility on the part of individuals and corporate internet users to protect themselves against cybercrimes.

“Security is not reserved for a group of people, it is truly everyone’s business; bringing competence and knowledge to help build a safer and more inclusive information society.”

In a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs of the Commission, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, Danbatta said more internet users are expected as services in different sectors of the economy are becoming digitalised.

He emphasised on the commitment of the Commission to always embark on policy initiatives that will enhance online security and also educate and equip the consumers of telecom services with information they need to be protected online.

Recall that as at December 2018, the number of internet users had increased marginally to more than 111.6 million.

It showed that overall internet users increased to 111,632,516 in December 2018 from the 108,457,051 recorded in November 2018, showing an increase of 3,175,465 new subscribers.
