The family of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola has recounted their nauseating experience in the hands of some gunmen who invaded their residence in Ikeja-Lagos, Wednesday.

The gunmen, who attacked the residence around 4 am and reportedly tortured the late businessman’s children, also made away with cash and property “worth millions of naira.”

A statement released on behalf of the family by Tundun Abiola, one of the children of the late businessman, said the police have been informed of the incident and investigation has commenced.New MKO Abiola

Tundun said the gunmen subjected the family “to extreme emotional torture and harassment”.

The statement reads: “The hoodlums subjected the family to extreme emotional torture and harassment and stole cash and other valuable items belonging to the family.

“The police have since been informed. The crime is being investigated. We are consoled by the fact that no life was lost in this unfortunate and frightening incident.”

The family gave thanks to God and expressed appreciation to those who showed them support across the world.

Reacting to the incident, spokesman of the Lagos police command, Mr. Bala Elkana said that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the robbery.

He said, “We have suspects in custody. We have commenced investigation.”

MKO Abiola was the candidate of Social Democratic Pary (SDP) in the 1993 presidential election.

Though he won the heart of Nigerians at the poll, winning the popular vote, the election was annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Abiola later declared himself as president and the chaos of June 12 ensued throughout the country, running into many years.

He died in controversial circumstance on July 7, 1998, just a month after General Sani Abacha who was at the helms then had died in office.

Recall President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2018 honoured MKO Abiola posthumously as hero of democracy in the country.

Buhari also tendered a national apology to the family of the late African philanthropist, for the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, adjudged to have been won by MKO Abiola.
