Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) has clinched the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to contest in the Ondo governorship election.

Jegede beat embattled deputy governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi and 6 other candidates at the primary in Akure, Wednesday.

He polled 888 votes while Ajayi his closest rival garnered 657 votes.

Eddy Olafeso polled 175 votes; Banji Okunomo, 90 votes; Olabode Ayorinde, 95 votes; and Boluwaji Kunlere 33 votes; Ebisemi Olusola, 29; while Erewa Goody polled 14.

2111 delegates participated in the keenly contested indirect primary election adopted by the PDP hierarchy.

The senior lawyer was the party’s flag-bearer for 2016 gubernatorial election in the state.

Following the victory, Jegede will face familiar opposition, incumbent governor Rotimi Akeredolu who had on Monday emerged as All Progressives Congress candidate.

The chairman of the primary election committee and governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi while declaring Jegede as the winner urged all other aspirants to close ranks and work on behalf of the party.
