The kidnapped wife and son of the late former Speaker of Edo State, Hon. Zakawanu Garuba, have reportedly regained their freedom.

A younger brother to the deceased Speaker who preferred anonymity, confirmed the release late Saturday, but said the whereabouts of the driver of the vehicle in which they travelled remained unknown.

The Garubas were captured by unknown gunmen while travelling from Abuja to Auchi with other relations for the burial rites of the late speaker.

The late speaker reportedly died earlier on Saturday in Abuja as a result of undisclosed illness.

According to reports, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, rained bullets on their vehicle at Irepeni community along the road, forcing the vehicle to stop.

Thereafter, they seized the wife and son of the late Speaker, other relations except his aged mother and fled the scene.

The Kogi state Police Spokesman, DSP William Aya who earlier confirmed the abduction, said that police swung into action immediately after receiving the report of the incident which occurred along Okene -Lokoja road.

He said that three of the victims had been rescued while the bush was being combed to locate others.

According to him, police have earlier in the day foiled attempted kidnap of six persons along Obajana-Kabba road.
