The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama has condemned the demolition of some sections of buildings belonging to the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana.
The buildings said to be the staff quarters of the High Commission were still under construction. They’re to house staff and visiting diplomats to the High Commission.
Onyeama in a tweet via his Twitter account on Sunday decried the demolition, demanding that urgent action be taken by the Ghanaian government.
The Minister wrote, ”We strongly condemn two outrageous criminal attacks in Accra, Ghana, on a residential building in our diplomatic premises by unknown persons in which a bulldozer was used to demolish the building.”
Meanwhile, it was reported that a businessman had previously claimed ownership of the piece of land where the Nigerian High Commission’s staff quarters were erected.
The man in company of some yet-to-be-identified armed men showed up at the building last week with some papers to support his claim and ordered his men to knock down the the building.
According to a source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian High Commission had petitioned the Ghanaian Government about it, but there was no response.
However, the businessman returned to the property on Friday with a bulldozer and allegedly pulled down the buildings with the support of his men.
