Many Lagosians cared less about the social distancing rules on Monday as they thronged streets and public buildings after 5 weeks of public inactivity occasioned by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Following President Muhammadu  Buhari’s directive unlocking the lockdown to cushion the effect of socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 crisis on citizens in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja, activities returned to the nation’s economic nerve centre–Lagos.

While a few people who filed out in banks, parks, markets tried to distance themselves physically from others, it was business as usual for a lot of Lagosians.

A high compliance to the use of face masks was observed but some people were still seen not using it despite months of campaign on the importance of wearing masks in public places to curb Covid-19 spread in the country.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Social distancing includes, staying away from others as much as possible and maintaining at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and the next person.

It also entails visiting a few places, only when necessary, including markets, malls, pharmacies, and hospitals; Avoiding large gatherings as much as possible. And this is not the time to host or attend big parties and ceremonies.

The Lagos state Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu, while speaking on the ‘dos and don’ts’ of implementing the gradual phasing of the lockdown on Sunday, warned against the flagrant disobedience of rules and measures to curtail the spread of the rampaging virus in the state.

Lagos recorded 39 new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday and the state’s tally currently stands at 1107, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said.
