Singer Chris Brown has said that he considered suicide in the aftermath of his assault on his then girlfriend Rihanna at the 2009 Grammy Awards.

“I felt like a f***ing monster. I was thinking about suicide and everything else,” Brown has said. “I wasn’t sleeping, I wasn’t eating. I just was getting high.”

Brown, who is due to play Dublin’s 3Arena on June 15, makes the tearful confession in the trailer for his new documentary, Welcome To My Life.

Brown says: “I went from being on top of the world, number one songs, being kind of like America’s sweetheart, to being public enemy number one.”

The pair got into a violent bust-up after leaving a pre-Grammy party in LA with reports at the time suggesting that the fight started in Brown’s’ Lamborghini over a text message from one of his exes.

Rihanna’s face was left bruised and battered after Brown, who was 19 at the time, punched, bit and choked her in the assault. Leaked photos of the attack left fans shocked and he was subsequently sentenced to five years of probation for the assault.

Brown’s mother, Joyce Hawkins, also talks about the incident in the new film. She said: “That was the worst day of my life and probably his life . . . I felt like I was going to lose my child.” she says.

The couple rekindled their romance in 2012 with Rihanna telling Vanity Fair magazine that she thought she could change him. “I was very protective of him,” she said at the time. “I felt that people didn’t understand him. Even after. But you know, you realise after a while that in that situation you’re the enemy.

“You want the best for them, but if you remind them of their failures, or if you remind them of bad moments in their life, or even if you say I’m willing to put up with something, they think less of you – because they know you don’t deserve what they’re going to give.”

Rihanna was spotted over the weekend partying at the Coachella music festival in California with Leonardo DiCaprio, prompting rumours that they may have sparked up their romance RTE.ie‎ reports.
