The first case of the new coronavirus has been recorded in Kano State, Nigeria’s northwest, the state government confirmed the development on Saturday.

With Kano recording its index case, the virus has continued to penetrate states in the country maintaining a nationwide geographical spread across Nigeria.

According to Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, the Special Assistant on Media to Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, while making the disclosure via his verified Twitter account, the index case was recorded in a patient who returned to Kano from Abuja before the closure of the state border.kano

He said: “Kano has recorded its first case of coronavirus in the State.

“The index case lives around UDB (Urban Development Board) Road, he returned from Abuja on the eve of the border closure in the State.

“All those close to him have been tested and are awaiting results. He is currently at Kwanar Dawaki Isolation Centre”. he said.

The virus was first confirmed in Nigeria on February 27 with Southwest’s Lagos quickly emerging as the epicenter of the pandemic in the country. But with time, it has since established presence in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

As of the time of this report on Saturday, the novel virus has been reported in 19 states and the FCT.

Nigeria overshot the 300 mark on Friday after it added 17 new cases in one day, The New Diplomat reported Saturday.
