The death toll in Africa from the coronavirus has reached 196, just as confirmed cases surpassed 5,786.

The Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) revealed the new figures on Wednesday.

It said 530 of the new cases happened in the last 24 hours, across 49 African countries.

South Africa is the worst-hit country with 1,353 confirmed cases.

Algeria follows with 716 cases. Egypt has 710.

Africa CDC said 412 infected people recovered.

However, the death toll increased from 172 to 196.
