President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday, directed the Senate Committee on Judiciary and the Senate Leader to look into the case of the designee for DG of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) beginning work without being confirmed by the Senate.

Speaking after a point of order raised by Senator Dino Melaye, on a ThisDay report that said that the Attorney General of the Federation had dared the Senate over the resumption of the DG of the National Human Rights Commission, the President of the Senate said:

“Sometime last year, there was a similar situation where people who had not been confirmed were beginning work.

“I thought this matter had been laid to rest because we have been very clear on this issue: once they have not been confirmed, they cannot go and resume.

“I think the Chairman of the Judiciary should look into this and find out if it is the case and sound a note of warning to all the appointees that they must follow the law and must be confirmed because at the end of the day, we must ensure that all these appointees must follow the law and do that which is within the law.

“Chairman of Judiciary should take this matter up and the Leader of the Senate should work with the Secretary to the State Government to resolve this and ensure that it does not happen again,” he said.
