Nigeria’s Return to the 2014 Nightmare

By Farooq A. Kperogi The events and atmospherics of the past few days in Nigeria feel eerily and frighteningly familiar. Sule Lamido, former Jigawa State Governor, has called on a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, to dump the ruling party.

Lamido, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential hopeful, hinged his call on the claims in some quarters that President Muhammadu Buhari was only integrating Tinubu due to the upcoming 2019 presidential election.

Speaking at a function in Abuja, the former governor stressed that Buhari had since after the 2015 elections sidelined and fought Tinubu through governors and ministers from the South-West.

He sent the message through former Lagos Commissioner for Finance, Wale Edun, who represented Tinubu at the event.

Lamido told Edun, “Tell Asiwaju that his brother and friend says he is in a wrong party. He will only recover and reintegrate himself as a democrat if he leaves the APC.

‘’Asiwaju was only integrated six months ago. They were using his governors and ministers from south-west to fight him! We know all these, he should leave APC for them.’’

Lamido noted that a coalition of forces across party divide would unseat Buhari in 2019.

He said, “2019 will be defined by borderless politicking. Those in APC and PDP will come together to save Nigeria’’.
