A tragic incident cast a pall over the 70th birthday celebration of the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Obi (Prof.) Epiphany Azinge, SAN, on Thursday, as the Odogwu (Chief Warrior) of Asaba, Obi Nwanze Oduah, collapsed and reportedly died during the reception.
Witnesses said the respected traditional titleholder suddenly slumped at the event venue, sending shock waves through the gathering of dignitaries and guests.
“Oduah suddenly collapsed at the reception ground, causing panic among guests,” an eyewitness recounted.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors were said to have confirmed him dead shortly after arrival. Details surrounding the cause of death remain unclear as at press time.
The unfortunate incident has thrown the Asaba community into mourning, overshadowing what was meant to be a moment of joy in honour of the monarch’s platinum jubilee.
Earlier in the day, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, had celebrated the Asagba’s life of peace, humility and service during a thanksgiving Mass held at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, Asaba.
The governor described the royal father as “a shining testament to wisdom, integrity, and purpose,” praising God for granting him strength and sound health at the biblical age of three score and ten.
“This thanksgiving is not just another birthday; it is an offering of gratitude for seventy years of divine mercy, strength, and grace,” Oborevwori said.
He lauded the monarch’s leadership qualities, noting that Asagba Azinge’s reign had been defined by peace and understanding. Citing Proverbs 16:31, the governor described the monarch’s gray hair as “a crown of glory gained through a righteous life.”
In his homily, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, said the celebration was a moment for deep reflection and gratitude, drawing on Psalm 90 which speaks of life’s journey to the age of seventy.
He commended the Asagba for his steadfast commitment to God and humanity, calling him “a true monarch who has served with love, integrity, and compassion.”
The jubilant atmosphere, however, quickly turned sombre following the sudden death of Chief Oduah, a development that has left residents in shock and mourning.
