Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday morning.

The arrest took place shortly after Sowore appeared in court premises in solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore’s arrest comes days after he spearheaded a #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja on Monday, October 20, which led to the detention of Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel Kanu, and others.

The New Diplomat reports that this is not the first time the activist has been arrested in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Sowore has been a consistent figure in pro-democracy demonstrations and a vocal critic of the government, often resulting in legal confrontations.

Earlier this year, he faced allegations of forgery and cyberstalking after honouring a police invitation in Abuja, a case the police had cited to justify his brief detention.
