The Abia State Government has issued a statement emphasizing that Governor Alex Otti’s viral “write your will” comment was a metaphorical expression of his commitment to electoral integrity, not a literal threat.
The clarification comes after Otti’s remarks sparked discussions among Nigerians.
The governor made the statement during his monthly media engagement held on Thursday at the Government House in Umuahia.
Responding to reports of alleged plots to manipulate the upcoming polls, Otti urged potential riggers to reconsider their actions, stating: “I have heard that some people around him say, ‘Oh, they must take over this state, they must write results.’ But the only advice I have for them is that if they truly want to write results, they should write something else before that time. You know what it is? Their will.”
Meanwhile, in an official release signed by Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, the government described the remark as “a figurative expression underscoring Otti’s dedication to the rule of law and the sanctity of the people’s mandate.”
The statement further elaborated that Otti’s words were aimed at deterring any attempts to undermine the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines, particularly premature campaigning and result fabrication.
“Governor Otti’s statement underscores his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Abia remains a model for free, fair, and transparent elections,” the statement reads.
He added that since taking office, Otti has maintained a peaceful, law-abiding approach to governance, preferring legal and institutional redress over intimidation or political vendetta.
“Not a single person has been unlawfully or politically detained since May 29, 2023,” Kanu said.
“This reflects the governor’s faith in justice, dialogue, and constitutionalism as the true tools of leadership.”
The commissioner said Otti’s philosophy of governance is built on justice, accountability, and respect for due process, adding that the administration is determined to protect citizens’ rights and freedoms under Section 39(1) of the Constitution.
“The era of electoral malpractice and subversion of the people’s will is over,” he added.
“Under Governor Otti’s leadership, Abia is building a democratic culture founded on transparency and integrity.”
