The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially declared a comprehensive two-week warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.
The action is set to begin at midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025.
ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the decision during a press briefing at the University of Abuja on Sunday, emphasizing that the strike serves as a “window of opportunity” for the government to resolve outstanding issues before a potential indefinite shutdown.
“This warning strike shall be total and comprehensive,” Piwuna stated, directing all branches to suspend academic activities immediately.
The New Diplomat reports that the latest declaration follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by ASUU on September 28, 2025, demanding urgent action on key welfare and funding concerns.
At the heart of the current impasse is the renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government Agreement, a pact aimed at revitalizing public universities but mired in delays for over eight years.
However, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa recently claimed the government was in the “final phase” of talks with ASUU and other unions.
