The National Council of State has given its approval to Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The unanimous endorsement, announced during a high-stakes meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, comes as the country gears up for an off-cycle election, including the Anambra State governorship poll slated for November 8, 2025.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had nominated the 58-year-old legal luminary from Kogi State, during the meeting.
This was contained in a statement posted on X by the President’s aide, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday
According to the statement, Tinubu told the Council that Amupitan, a 58-year-old Professor of Law from Kogi State, is the first person from the North-Central state to be nominated for the position.
The New Diplomat reports that Amupitan’s appointment is expected to fill the void left by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose decade-long tenure as INEC Chairman officially concluded on October 7, 2025, after two five-year terms that oversaw landmark general elections in 2019 and 2023.
