Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has declared that a secondary school certificate is more than adequate for anyone aspiring to hold political office in Nigeria.

Sani’s statement comes amid a fresh scandal involving Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Nnaji.

A report, which has sent shockwaves through Nigeria, revealed that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has reportedly disowned Nnaji’s claimed Bachelor of Science degree.

According to the university’s verification, Nnaji did not complete his studies there and was never issued the certificate in question.

This development has raised questions about the vetting processes for high-level appointments in Nigeria.

Joining the debates, Sani said that all a politician needs to contest elections or secure a political appointment in the country is a secondary school certificate.

Reacting to the development in a post via his X handle on Monday, Sani cautioned political office seekers against making false claims about their academic qualifications.

He wrote: “All you need to contest elections or for a political appointment is a secondary school certificate. There is no way in the realm of politics that one can claim any unearned qualifications without his or her political opponents digging into the matter. Some troubles are unnecessarily self-inflicted.”
