The Lagos State Police Command has cleared the Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, Paul Adefarasin, of any wrongdoing following public uproar over a viral video in which he was seen holding what appeared to be a firearm during a church service.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said Pastor Adefarasin voluntarily reported at its headquarters in Ikeja for questioning after the video circulated widely on social media, sparking debates about the propriety of a cleric brandishing a weapon in the pulpit.
“After a thorough investigation, including interrogation and a cautionary statement from Pastor Adefarasin, it was established that the object in question was a stun gun and not a lethal weapon or firearm,” Adebisi stated.
“Consequent to our findings, the Lagos State Police Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued,” the police added.
The incident, which trended online few months ago showed Pastor Adefarasin briefly displaying the device during a sermon, prompting criticism and concerns over gun control and safety in religious spaces.
The police clarified that while stun guns are legal for personal protection, their public display may raise unnecessary alarm. The command, however, stressed that no law was broken in this case.
It reiterated its commitment to transparency in handling high-profile matters, while assuring the public of its dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring safety across Lagos.
