The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has kicked off the much-anticipated local government elections across all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) on Saturday.

The New Diplomat reports that poll, aimed at electing council officials for 319 wards, is coming after a verdict by Nigeria’s Supreme Court that nullified the October 5, 2024, elections.

Meanwhile, The New Diplomat’s checks revealed that the election has commenced in most polling units in the state’s 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 319 wards as of August 30, 2025.

Specific polling units where voting has been confirmed to have begun or where preparations are actively underway include:

Ward 2, Unit 10, Rumuodara Town Hall, Obio-Akpor LGA: RSIEC officials were present, and the voters had begun casting their votes for their preferred candidate

Ward 13, Polling Units 20 and 21, Rumuola, Obio-Akpor LGA: Election officials are present, and voting has commenced. But there is a low turnout, according to reports.

Oruama/Eneda Primary School, Polling Unit 1, Ediro Ward 2, Ahoada West LGA: RSIEC officials are present with materials, and voting is ongoing.

Nigeria Police Area Command Headquarters, Bori, Khana LGA: Election agents were gathered, awaiting the release of voting materials to polling centers to begin the electoral process.

Polling units within Port Harcourt metropolis: Accreditation had commenced in many polling units, indicating the start of voting in these areas.
