Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been sentenced to 18 years in prison following a high-profile corruption trial.

The verdict, delivered on June 30, 2025, in Malabo, comes after Engonga’s arrest in September 2024 for embezzlement, illicit enrichment, and abuse of office.

The case gained global attention when hundreds of explicit videos involving Engonga surfaced online.

Engonga had been detained at Black Beach Prison since September 2024 following corruption probe, which is unrelated to the over 400 sextapes involving high-profile women uncovered in his office and house.

During Monday’s court proceedings, prosecutors detailed what they described as a sophisticated scheme to divert public funds for personal gain.

The scheme was allegedly coordinated by Engonga during his tenure as head of the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance from 2015 to 2020.

In addition to the prison terms, the charges include a recommended fine of over 910 million CFA francs (approximately $ 1.5 million) and a prohibition fromcholding any public office throughout the sentence period.

The New Diplomat reports that Engonga was allegedly caught with over 400 sextapes of the wives of notable people in the country during an investigation into the alleged corruption.

Authorities conducted a surprise search of his house and office, uncovering a collection of CDs that revealed explicit encounters with various married women.

The videos allegedly include interactions with several prominent figures, such as the man’s brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the President of Equatorial Guinea, the wife of the Director General of Police, and about 20 wives of ministers in the country.
