The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has reacted to the reports making the rounds that its officers besieged the Peoples Democratic Party’s national headquarters located in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, in a bid to prevent the party’s Board of the and National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Monday from holding.
The command described the reports as baseless and misleading, stressing that its officers were deployed to the secretariat to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
The Abuja Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated this in a statement issued on Monday.
She said, “The FCT Police Command is aware of the news making the rounds alleging that the police sealed off the PDP secretariat in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
“The command wishes to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and does not reflect the true situation on ground.
“Police officers were only deployed to the venue to maintain law and order and ensure public safety in line with their constitutional mandate. At no time was the secretariat sealed off by the police.
“The Commissioner of Police, FCT, urges media outlets to verify information through the office of the command police public relations officer before disseminating.”
It was widely reported earlier on Monday (today) that police officers, armed to the teeth, blocked the entrance to the PDP’s secretariat denying access to party’s stalwarts intending to gain entry to the premises to begin its BoT and NEC meetings scheduled for today.
The New Diplomat had reported how some members of staff of the party were allegedly chase out of the secretariat.
Also a chieftain of the party, Chief Olabode George had earlier lamented the occupation of the secretariat by police officers.
The elderstateman insisted that the meetings will be held while announcing a change of venue for the scheduled event.
