The Kano Police Command has confirmed the deaths of at least five people in the state following a bomb explosion on Saturday.

According to police the incident left a total of 15 casualties in its wake as 10 other people were severely wounded by the explosion.

Explaining how the incident happened, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Ibrahim, said the suspected explosion involved an Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, personnel in a military-grade mortar vehicle.

Ibrahim said, ā€œI received a call about the incident that had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion – possibly an EOD on a military mortar bomb vehicle that exploded.

ā€œFifteen people were affected and rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. I rushed to the place and found out that five died and 10 are receiving treatment.

ā€œThe case is under investigation, but from the information I got, the vehicle came from Yobe state.

ā€œPreliminary findings suggest the explosive material was being transported by a trailer, but it remains unclear whether the vehicle was carrying military personnel or contractors,ā€ Ibrahim said.

Residents of the state have been gripped by fear and apprehension following the incident; their feelings are justified considering the fact that a similar explosion by a suicide bomber happened hours ago in Borno state.

The Borno incident reportedly claimed 20 lives.
