Billionaire entrepreneur and founder of Tesla, Elon Musk has officially parted ways with the administration of the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

This marks the end of his high-profile tenure as a special government employee leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The announcement, made late Wednesday via Musk’s social media platform X, comes on the heels of his public criticism of Trump’s signature “big beautiful bill,” a sweeping tax and spending proposal.

In his farewell post on X, Musk thanked Trump for the opportunity, stating: “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.”

Musk, tasked with slashing federal bureaucracy, spearheaded efforts that reportedly resulted in about 260,000 federal job cuts—roughly 12% of the civilian workforce—through layoffs, buyouts, and early retirements.

However, it appears tensions flared as Musk openly criticized Trump’s legislative agenda, particularly the multi-trillion-dollar bill, which he argued would balloon the federal deficit and undermine DOGE’s cost-cutting mission.

In an interview with the press, Musk remarked, “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it could be both.”
