Following a heartbreaking deadly incident that happened in Ibadan, Oyo State, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive probe into the killing of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade, a West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidate.

The student was fatally struck by a stray bullet on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, while heading to his examination center in the Gbagi-Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to reports, Kehinde was traveling in his father’s car alongside his twin brother when a police officer, engaged in a joint traffic enforcement operation with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), fired a shot aimed at the vehicle’s tire.

The Oyo State Police command has also confirmed that Kehinde’s father, Odunayo Alade, was allegedly driving against traffic in a black Honda Accord (registration: FST 639 JU) at the time of the incident.

Reacting to the development, Egbetokun in a statement issued by Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, said the police officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody.

Adejobi said the IGP assured members of the public that justice will be served, while pledging transparent investigation into the matter.

The statement reads in part: “‎The Inspector-General of Police condemned the incident and assured that the officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody while a full-scale investigation is underway.

“He equally reiterated that the process will be transparent, and its findings will be made public to ensure justice is duly served as he expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased young man.”
