New INEC Boss and Tinubu’s Visibilization of Northern Yorubas

By Farooq A. Kperogi Everyone who is familiar with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unabashed Yorubacentricism expected him to appoint a Yoruba person to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as INEC chairman. The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has issued a statement condemning moves by a group to initiate a recall process against Senator Ede Dafinone, the lawmaker representing Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State at the Senate, describing it as a “baseless”.

In a statement released by its Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, the party faulted the recall campaign against Dafinone, saying those behind it are not card-carrying members of the party.

This comes after a group under the aegis of Nigeria Polling Units Chairmen, had asked Dafinone to resign honourably or face recall.

The group led by Comrade Nicholas Evwienure, cited poor performance and lack of impactful representation as reasons for the recall move.

It mandated its members to collect and compile eligible voters’ signatures across Delta Central Senatorial district for the recall process.

Evwienure, in his remarks at a stakeholders meeting, said: “Though the Urhobo nation is about the fifth largest ethnic nationality in Nigeria, it has only one member in the apex law-making chamber of the national assembly.

“While this is not enough, how can we go further to have a representative whose voice is not heard in the chamber? The business of representing people is a serious one and requires more rigorous commitment in all ramifications, but this is obviously lacking here.”

Reacting, Onojeghuo, in the statement emphasized that the group lacks the moral or political standing to represent the constituents of Delta Central Senatorial District.

The APC accused the group of orchestrating a malicious campaign. The party also highlighted Dafinone’s achievements, noting his “robust legislative contributions” and “development-focused interventions” that have redefined public service in Delta Central.

The statement reads in part: “We categorically condemn this mischievous recall exercise in its entirety as a farcical exhibition of ignorance.

“It is no coincidence that this campaign surfaced at a time when Senator Dafinone is receiving widespread commendation across Delta Central for his sterling performance in the Senate.

“From robust legislative contributions to effective representation and development-focused interventions, Senator Dafinone has exceeded expectations and redefined public service in our Senatorial District.

“It is on record that Senator Dafinone has conducted himself with utmost dignity, legislative excellence and unwavering dedication to the people of Delta Central since his assumption of office. His record speaks for itself.

“Let it be known that Senator Ede Dafinone enjoys the full confidence and support of the APC leadership and members in Delta State. There is no legitimate recall effort recognized or endorsed by our Party or by any credible leaders in Delta Central…”
